Sweetsie Bakery & Cafe is what I would have described as SUH-WHEEET in my younger days. Heck, I have to bring that back for this place & say it now. It is a fitting description for this little place tucked into a shopping center alongside a bustling Walmart.
Let me take you back to the beginning. Yes, I frequent said Walmart but who looks at what is in those little shopping centers? Not me. Not unless I am looking for a Payless or a Gamestop. I found out about this locally owned & newly opened shop from an app called Nextdoor that my actual nextdoor neighbor invited me to join. It turns out you can find out about everything from garage sales to political campaigns going on in your surrounding neighborhoods through this app. This is the first place that anyone started a thread about that went viral. What started out as a recommendation from one lady, now has over 75 responses and just as many “thanks.”
My husband & I waited a whole day after the original post to give the place a try. It looks very unassuming from the outside. No flashy things in the windows or loud colored posters anywhere to be found. Then you open the door. How chic, modern, & clean is this place? The diner style tables painted black with their logo as the only decoration. Beautiful industrial chandeliers for light & the sweets counter all within your eye line upon entering. Just clean & pretty. We were greeted by the younger of the co-owners, a local mother & daughter team. After explaining to her what brought us in, she happily told us we were the 4th or 5th customers in one day from the app. (Best free advertising I have ever heard of.) She then explained the menu.
The whole concept is centered around rolled ice cream. Wait…..what the heck is rolled ice cream??? The mother then proceeds to show us exactly how this delectable dessert is created right before our very eyes. It is a frozen pudding pop from our youth molded into pretty roll ups & topped with any variety of cookies, fruits, & syrups. They have already matched up topping suggestions on the menu but encourage you to be creative.
They also have actual food on the menu, including yummy & unexpected flavors of egg rolls & bakery style sandwiches. I had a Greek salad & found out all the dressings are as homemade & original as their funky cookies. The cookies themselves are a wonderful mix of crunchy on the outside & gooey on the inside, but what makes them “funky” is their shape. They are dipped in the middle which looks perfect for topping to me. These ladies keep cooking up these creative & scrumptious treats, they won’t be “off the tour” for very long at all.
