Why Trip Insurance

Trip insurance is an actual insurance policy, just like your car insurance, that is there "just in case." Different policies have different coverages. You can be protected from losing your money if the trip is cancelled or cut short, if your luggage is lost, even if a cruise skips or changes a port of call. Some policies also contain medical coverage, emergency transportation, and concierge services to help no matter what time zone you are in, 24 hours a day.

How to Purchase Trip Insurance

There are 2 ways to purchase trip insurance.

If you are traveling on a cruise or with a tour vendor, they will have their own insurance policies for sale. This can be beneficial as the vendor is more willing to work with special circumstances if you have purchased their trip insurance. The down side to this insurance is it will only cover the portion of the trip booked with that vendor. For example, you book a cruise with Celebrity but purchase your airfare with Southwest, your flight will not be covered if you purchase Celebrity's insurance policy.

You can also purchase a stand alone policy with companies like Allianz or Tripmate. The cost can be a little more than a vendors BUT you can cover ALL portions of your trip in one policy even if the pieces of the trip are booked with different vendors. Many stand alone policies also offer medical coverage for when your medical isn't accepted.
