How to Choose a Hotel Beyond the Pretty Pictures

A beautiful hotel photo can get a trip idea started. It can’t tell you everything about staying there.
When I help choose accommodations, I look at how the property fits the vacation you actually want. Location, room details, what’s included, and the pace of your trip can matter just as much as the view.
You’re choosing a place to spend your time off. Here’s what I’d put ahead of the pretty pictures.
Start with where you want to spend your days
A hotel described as “close to everything” may still be inconvenient for your plans.
Think about the places you want to visit and how you’ll get there. Will you walk, use transfers, take public transportation, or have a rental car? A property farther away might work well for a quiet retreat and less well for a short city stay.
I consider the location alongside the itinerary so your days don’t disappear into getting from one place to another.
Check the actual room category
A property’s main photo gallery can show several room types. The room you’re considering may have different bedding, space, views, or amenities.
For a family, the sleeping arrangements can be especially important. For a couple who wants quiet mornings, the balcony or location of the room may matter more.
I want the recommendation to reflect the room being considered, rather than an impression created by the hotel’s best photo.
Compare the full cost of the stay
The nightly rate is a starting point.
Depending on the property, parking, breakfast, transfers, or other charges may change the overall comparison. What’s included also matters if you’ll actually use it.
A higher room rate can sometimes make sense when it reduces other costs or makes your plans easier. Sometimes the simpler option is exactly right. The useful comparison is the whole stay.
Match the property to your travel style
A busy resort with lots happening can be wonderful for one traveler and tiring for another.
Before narrowing down hotels, I want to understand what you’re looking forward to. Do you want activities nearby? A quieter setting? Time at the property, or mainly a comfortable place to return after exploring?
Your answer helps shape the choices.
A few questions worth asking
Should I book the cheapest hotel?
Compare location, transportation, room details, and inclusions before deciding. The lowest nightly rate doesn’t necessarily create the lowest overall trip cost or the best experience for your plans.
Can you help if I’m overwhelmed by hotel options?
Yes. You don’t need to arrive with a shortlist. We can start with your dates, budget range, travel style, and what matters most to you, then discuss the planning process and fee before research begins.
